Pero a pesar de estos avances, capturar rápidamente sujetos en movimiento sigue siendo un desafío. El problema de las fotos borrosas puede ser frustrante, especialmente en ambientes oscuros. Sin embargo, este problema pronto puede ser cosa del pasado, ya que Qualcomm se ha asociado con la empresa francesa de chips de cámara Prophesee para desarrollar un nuevo tipo de sensor llamado sensor Metavision basado en eventos.

¿Cómo funciona el sensor de la cámara de Prophesee?

A diferencia de los sensores de cámara tradicionales, que se basan en la misma frecuencia de cuadro fija para toda la imagen varias veces por segundo, cada píxel de un sensor Metavision tiene un núcleo lógico que monitorea constantemente los cambios en la escena. Esto significa que el sensor solo captura los datos cuando cambia la escena, lo que lo hace mucho más rápido y eficiente que los chips de cámara tradicionales.

Para ilustrar cómo funciona esto, tomemos el ejemplo de un golfista haciendo un swing. Un sensor tradicional captura un inventario completo del cielo, los árboles y la hierba detrás del golfista, pero pierde información importante como el swing del palo y el movimiento de la pelota. El sensor Metavision, por otro lado, captura solo los datos que cambian, lo que le permite capturar toda la información importante sin perder el ritmo.

Si bien el sensor Metavision podría revolucionar la fotografía de teléfonos inteligentes, no puede funcionar como una unidad independiente, ya que el teléfono inteligente debe combinar los datos del sensor tradicional y los datos del sensor Metavision para producir imágenes borrosas.

A pesar de la limitación, los resultados son bastante impresionantes, y Qualcomm espera aprovechar su asociación con Prophesee para ofrecer esta experiencia en sus próximos teléfonos inteligentes con tecnología Snapdragon, con kits de desarrollo que se lanzarán este año. Actualmente, los chips de cámara de Prophesee se subcontratarán a Sony Group Corp para la producción, y la producción en masa está prevista para el próximo año.
